38th Annual Author Event

Featuring Gilbert King

Wednesday, May 9th at 5:30pm

News-Journal Center, 221 N. Beach St., Daytona Beach

Pulitzer Prize winning author, Gilbert King (Devil in the Grove) will be returning to Daytona, to kick off a national book tour of his newest title, Beneath a Ruthless Sun: A True Story of Violence, Race, and Justice Lost and Found to be released on April 24. This book is a spellbinding true story of racism, privilege, and official corruption that chronicles the persistence of Willis McCall’s nemesis, journalist Mabel Norris Reese (Chesley), a Daytona Beach resident until her death in 1995. King’s presentation will be videotaped to air on C-SPAN Book TV.

King has written about race, the death penalty, and United States Supreme Court history for the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Smithsonian magazine’s history blog, Past Imperfect. He is also a contributor to The Marshall Project, and the author of The Execution of Willie Francis: Race, Murder, and the Search for Justice in the American South, published in 2008.

King’s presentation will be videotaped to air on C-SPAN Book TV.

In conjunction with King’s book talk, the Friends will be hosting a VIP Cocktail Reception at the News-Journal Center preceding the presentation. Those attending the reception will receive preferred parking, hors d’oeuvres with a complimentary beverage from the cash bar, a meet and greet with the author, an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for themed gift baskets each with a minimum value of $200.00, and preferred seating at the presentation.

The Friends is a volunteer, nonprofit (tax ID#85-8012622393C-9) organization, that raises money for the sole benefit of the library. Past Friends purchases include: laptops for the computer lab, a baby grand piano for concerts, a 10-inch telescope for star gazing programs, and sponsorship of free technology summer camps for teens in the library’s Launch Pad.

On September 11, 2017 the library, located on City Island, suffered an enormous amount of damage due to Hurricane Irma and was forced to close until repairs were completed. The library and our store will not re-open until Saturday, May 5. As a result of this closure, the Friends store located inside the library has generated no revenue since September 8th.

This reception is our major fundraising event. Your support will assist in our continual efforts to provide the library with equipment and programming that enrich the lives of everyone in our community.

We hope you will want to be included in this effort.
